Course reflection

I came into this course with a lot of excitement, passion and eagerness to learn. As a woman of colour in STEM, I have always felt very passionate about EDID ( (Equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization) but never had the opportunity to take a course specific to the topic. I was able to learn what the term diversity means when applied to medical science research and why it is important to work towards equitable, inclusive and diverse medical science. This course has helped me strengthen and grow my knowledge of EDID, contribute my previous knowledge and share my lived experiences as a woman of colour in class discussions. Being able to incorporate class material and instructor feedback for all my assignments helped create deliverables I felt very confident with.

EDI Statement

Interdisciplinary Skills Acquired: Communication and Critical Reflection

I was able to write an EDI statement that I believe is honest and true to my values. As I dived deeper into the topic of EDI as the classes progressed, my EDI statement became stronger.

Tidal Equity Reflection/Critique

Interdisciplinary Skills Acquired: Communication, Critical Reflection and Evidence-based Decision Making.

For this assignment we had to provide a reflection and critique of the Tidal Equality Program – The Equity Sequence for Students. Going through the program helped me look at it in a critical lens. I was able to point out the flaws of the program while also appreciating aspects that I found useful. I was also able to learn from the program.

Action Plan

Interdisciplinary Skills Acquired: Communication, Evidence-based Decision Making, Working in Diverse Teams, Leadership and Project Management

For this assignment I worked in a group to create an Action Plan on recommendations for considering EDID in research/medical curricula policies. Our Action Plan focused on the need for properly conducted race-based data in research. We created this plan by having multiple discussions and ensuring our message was clear. We incorporated materials learned in class and did our own research to create a document we believe will be useful in the future.
